‘Timo equalizer’ Gwangju draws 1-1 away to Pohang… 6th straight win

By Han Jae-hyun Reporter= Gwangju FC extended its unbeaten streak to six matches thanks to Timo’s performance.

Gwangju drew 1-1 with Pohang Steelers in the 26th round of the Hana OneQ K League 1 2023 at Pohang Steel Yard at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Despite the loss, Gwangju extended its unbeaten streak to six games (2 wins, 4 draws). Pohang also remained unbeaten in five consecutive matches (2 wins, 3 draws) and in second place.

The home team Pohang started 4-2-3-1. Lee Ho-jae started up top, followed by Baek Sung-dong, Go Young-joon, and Kim Seung-dae in the second line. Kim Jun-ho and Oberdan paired up in the third. The back four was Wandelsson, Grant, Ha Chang-rae, and Park Seung-wook, with Hwang In-jae in goal.

The away team, Gwangju, lined up in a 4-4-2. Thomas and Heo were paired up top. The flanks and midfield were Uhm Ji-sung, Lee Sun-min, Jung Ho-yeon, and Asani. The back four was Lee Min-ki, Ahn Young-gyu, Timo, and Doo Hyun-seok, with Kim Kyung-min in goal.

Pohang scored the first goal in the 20th minute. Go Young-joon scored with his left foot from an exquisite pass from Oberdan.

Gwangju responded in the 36th minute when Lee Min-ki penetrated deep into the Pohang penalty area and fired a curling right-footed shot that went wide of the side netting.

Pohang quickly made a change. In the 36th minute, Kim Jun-ho was replaced by veteran Kim Jong-woo to bolster the midfield.

With a 1-0 lead at halftime, Pohang brought on Zeca at the start of the second half. Pohang continued their momentum in the second half. In the second minute of the second half, Grant’s header went wide.

Gwangju brought on Kim Han-gil and Aaron in the 10th minute of the second half as the game was not going well. In the 18th minute, Lee Eun-hee was shown a straight red card.

Gwangju tied the game with an equalizer. Timo converted Lee Sun-min’s pass from the right side into a right-footed mid-range shot that beat the right side of the Pohang goal in the 22nd minute.

With the momentum on their side, Gwangju utilized the quick feet of Kim Han-gil to score the equalizer. Pohang was urgent to stop Kim’s breakthrough.

Both teams threw down the gauntlet in the final minutes of the second half. Pohang brought on Kim In-sung and Gwangju brought on Lee Sang-ki and Oh Of-sung to show their determination for the final goal.

Pohang and Gwangju battled to the end. The defenses of both teams did not concede a goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
